Sources Behind the Michael Z. Stern Encyclopedia
Michael Stern is the subject of this encyclopedia; the page below is its bibliography, every independent source that an entry or a subject index cites, collected once, grouped by subject and followed by the entries that rely on it. It is not a list of his own writing. His essays on Medium, WordPress and Blogger have their summary entries on michaelsternjds.com, and nothing from them is reprinted here.
The sources run from museum reviews to engineering explainers. When the Museum of the City of New York marked a century of zoning, Hyperallergic’s review noted that the code had grown from 12 pages in 1916 to about 1,300 by 2016, and that the privately owned public spaces scattered through Manhattan exist because a developer who provides one may build higher.1 On air rights, 99% Invisible explains that unused development rights in New York are measured in floor area ratio, that transfers between adjacent lots are called zoning lot mergers and need no specific permission from the city, and that landmark transfers are allowed where the Landmarks Preservation Commission has found a building significant.2 On the physics of thin towers, Practical Engineering shows with a bench model that a pendulum tuned to a building’s frequency swaps energy back and forth with the structure until damping is added, after which the motion dies away about six times faster than it would alone.3
Every source listed below was fetched and read before it was cited, and each one was screened against the site’s exclusion list before an entry could use it. Press comes first within each subject where it exists, then research and institutional pages. The groups follow the nine subject indexes, and sources cited by the home page and the core pages fall under a final heading. New entries are announced through the feed linked at the foot of the list.
623 independent sources from 312 publishers, cited across the entries and grouped by subject.
