Michael Z. Stern Encyclopedia, A to Z
Michael Stern’s five subjects produce entries on procedure as often as on physics, and this index is the one page that links every one of them, in alphabetical order. At one end sit the permits of preservation practice: an architect’s guide from Fontan Architecture explains that the Landmarks Preservation Commission issues three kinds of approval, two of them at staff level and the third, the certificate of appropriateness, only after a full commission review that about five percent of applications require.1 At the other end sit the tests of tower engineering: a wind engineer writing in Structure magazine describes the three common wind tunnel methods for a tall building and notes that an aeroelastic model, the costliest of them, is the one that captures the loss of damping when vortex shedding approaches its peak.2 Every title in the list leads to its entry, and the nine subject indexes follow the alphabet.
